Maesdu Golf Club – Llandudno
Our North Wales Open begins at Maesdu Golf Club, one of Llandudno's historic golf courses and a wonderfully varied test overlooking the spectacular North Wales coastline.

Founded in 1915, Maesdu has strong links to legendary five-time Open Champion and golf course architect James Braid, who advised on the development of the course. Working alongside the club's professional, Tom Jones, the course developed into the distinctive 18-hole layout golfers experience today.

Maesdu offers an unusual combination of links and parkland golf, with panoramic views across Conwy Bay towards the Great Orme and the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia). At around 6,500 yards, the challenge comes from accuracy, course management and negotiating its fast, sloping greens rather than simply length.

But Maesdu also has a remarkable place in British professional golf history.

In 1938, the club hosted the Llandudno International Golf Trophy, a professional team competition between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

England won the inaugural event under captain Percy Alliss, father of legendary golfer and broadcaster Peter Alliss. The outbreak of the Second World War prevented the competition from being staged again, but the magnificent trophy survived.

Decades later, that same Llandudno International Trophy became the trophy awarded to the winners of the PGA Cup, the biennial contest between club professionals representing Great Britain & Ireland and the United States.

Maesdu's professional tournament history continued after the war.

The club hosted the prestigious Penfold Tournament six times, attracting some of the biggest names in British golf.

Maesdu also staged the PGA Close Championship – the championship now known as the BMW PGA Championship – in the 1950s, with winners at Maesdu including Charlie Ward, Peter Alliss and Harry Bradshaw.

More than a century of history, its connection with James Braid, a remarkable professional tournament heritage and spectacular North Wales scenery make Maesdu a fitting venue to begin four days of golf.

Nefyn Golf Club
Our second round takes us west onto the spectacular Llyn Peninsula and one of the most visually dramatic golf destinations in Wales – Nefyn Golf Club.

Nefyn occupies an extraordinary piece of coastal land high above the Irish Sea, with spectacular views towards the mountains of Eryri and across the coastline of the Llyn Peninsula.

The club offers 27 holes, divided between the Yellow, Red and Blue nines, allowing different combinations to be used and giving the venue a character unlike almost any other course in Wales.

The championship layout extends beyond 6,700 yards and combines elevated tees, dramatic changes of direction and exposed coastal terrain where the wind can completely transform the challenge.

But it is the setting that makes Nefyn truly unforgettable.

Several holes play high above the coastline, with the sea surrounding the golfer on multiple sides and spectacular views appearing throughout the round.

Accuracy and imagination are essential. The exposed position means controlling trajectory becomes particularly important when the wind blows, while natural contours and changing elevations constantly influence club selection.

Nefyn isn't simply a round of golf – it is one of the great scenic golfing experiences in Wales and provides a spectacular contrast to our opening round at Maesdu.

Conwy Golf Club
Day three takes us to Conwy Golf Club, one of the great championship links of North Wales.

Golf has been played on the Conwy Morfa since 1869, with the club itself established in 1890. The first professionally designed course on the site was created in 1875 by Jack Morris, nephew of the legendary Old Tom Morris.

Conwy is a genuine traditional links, occupying fast-running coastal terrain between the mountains and the sea. Firm fairways, strategically positioned bunkering, gorse and the ever-changing wind demand the full range of traditional links shots.

Its championship history is exceptional.

In 2021, Conwy hosted the Curtis Cup, bringing the finest female amateur golfers from Great Britain & Ireland and the United States to North Wales.

The club has also hosted the European Ladies' Team Championship, Men's Home Internationals, Welsh championships and numerous R&A events, while in 2025 it staged both the R&A Girls' Amateur Championship and Welsh Men's Stroke Play Championship.

Conwy also became the first course in Wales to host Final Qualifying for The Open, further underlining its reputation as one of the country's leading championship venues.

With the mountains of Eryri providing a spectacular backdrop and Conwy Castle visible in the distance, the setting is every bit as impressive as the golf.

A genuine championship links with more than 150 years of golfing history, Conwy provides one of the standout rounds of the North Wales Open.

North Wales Golf Club – Llandudno
Our final round brings us back to Llandudno and North Wales Golf Club, a traditional links occupying a spectacular position on the town's West Shore.

Founded in 1894, North Wales Golf Club has more than 130 years of history and provides a fittingly traditional conclusion to the event.

The course runs across natural linksland alongside the Conwy Estuary and Irish Sea, with wonderful views towards Anglesey, the Great Orme and the mountains of Eryri.

Its exposed coastal position means the wind is almost always part of the challenge.

Firm-running fairways encourage golfers to use the ground, while traditional bunkering, natural undulations and changing wind directions place a premium on creativity and intelligent course management.

Rather than relying on sheer length, North Wales rewards players capable of controlling trajectory and positioning the ball correctly – the skills that have defined links golf for generations.

The club has a long history of hosting important Welsh competitions, including the **Welsh Team Championships**, adding further championship pedigree to a course that retains the character of traditional seaside golf.

After Maesdu's remarkable tournament history, the dramatic cliffs and coastline of Nefyn and the championship links of Conwy, North Wales Golf Club provides an appropriately traditional final test.

There will be two Nearest the Pin competitions during each round, with a £25 GAGT voucher awarded to each winner.

Optional Sweep

The draw will be available on our website 2 days before the each round. The Draw for the last round will be made in score order.

Merit points will be awarded for all four rounds.

Points will be awarded on the basis of 100 points to the winner, 99 points for runner-up, 98 points for third, and so on.

Participants need to be a current member of the GAGT to qualify for merit points.
