Sunningdale – Old Course
Ranked #11 in Golf Monthly’s 2025/26 Top 100 Courses in the UK & Ireland, Sunningdale’s Old Course is one of the most celebrated heathland courses in world golf.
Designed by Willie Park Jr. and opened in 1901, the Old winds through magnificent Surrey and Berkshire heathland, with towering pines, sweeping expanses of heather and naturally undulating terrain creating one of the most beautiful settings in English golf.
The course is renowned for its strategic design rather than excessive length. Position from the tee is crucial, with heather, bunkering and subtle changes in elevation continually influencing the ideal line of play. Beautifully contoured greens and firm heathland turf reward imagination and precise approach play.
One of its most famous holes is the par-4 10th, where the elevated tee provides one of the iconic views in English golf before players descend towards the halfway house.
The Old also possesses exceptional championship pedigree. Sunningdale has welcomed many of the greatest players in the game and has staged prestigious championships including the Senior Open Championship, Women's Open and numerous elite amateur events.
Perhaps its most famous moment came during International Final Qualifying for The Open in 2009, when Sir Nick Faldo shot a remarkable 62 around the Old Course at the age of 51.
Beautiful, historic and consistently ranked among the finest courses in the British Isles, the Old provides an exceptional opening round to our day at Sunningdale.
Sunningdale – New Course
Ranked #8 in Golf Monthly’s 2025/26 Top 100 Courses in the UK & Ireland, the New Course is regarded as one of the great masterpieces of legendary golf course architect Harry Colt.
Opened in 1923, the New is often considered the more demanding of Sunningdale’s two courses. Colt used the natural heathland brilliantly, creating a strategic layout where heather, elevation changes and beautifully positioned bunkers demand both accuracy and intelligent course management.
The New begins relatively gently before revealing its true character, with several holes climbing through dramatic heathland and pine-covered terrain. Its famous par-3 5th is one of the standout holes, played from an elevated tee across a valley of heather to a beautifully positioned green.
Throughout the course, golfers are continually asked to choose the correct line and position their ball for the next shot. Miss in the wrong place and the heather and bunkering can make recovery extremely difficult.
Despite being called the “New”, the course is now more than a century old and has developed into one of the world's great examples of traditional heathland golf.
Playing the Old and New on the same day gives Global Amateur Golf Tour competitors an exceptional opportunity – 36 holes across two courses ranked inside the Top 11 in the UK & Ireland.
Few 36-hole golf days can offer that combination of history, architecture, championship pedigree and quality.
