The Berkshire – Red Course
Ranked #42 in Golf Monthly’s 2025/26 Top 100 Courses in the UK & Ireland, the Red Course at The Berkshire is one of England’s great heathland courses.
Designed by renowned architect Herbert Fowler and opened in 1928, the Red is laid out across magnificent Crown Estate heathland near Ascot. Fowler made exceptional use of the natural landscape, with heather, pine, elevation changes and sandy terrain creating a course that feels completely at home in its surroundings.
The Red is particularly unusual for its configuration of six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s. Its collection of par 3s is regarded as one of the great strengths of the course, while the shorter par 5s provide genuine birdie opportunities for players willing to take them on. Stray from the fairways, however, and the surrounding heather and pine can quickly turn an attacking opportunity into a difficult recovery.
The Berkshire has a long association with elite amateur golf and has hosted major events including the English Amateur Championship, British Seniors Open Amateur Championship, Women's Home Internationals and the Vagliano Trophy. Its prestigious Berkshire Trophy has also been won by names including Sir Nick Faldo and Sandy Lyle.
Beautiful, strategic and consistently recognised amongst the finest courses in the British Isles, the Red provides a superb opening 18 holes to our day at The Berkshire.
The Berkshire – Blue Course
Ranked #57 in Golf Monthly’s 2025/26 Top 100 Courses in the UK & Ireland, the Blue Course completes what is an exceptional 36-hole experience at The Berkshire.
Also designed by Herbert Fowler, the Blue shares the Red’s beautiful heathland landscape but provides a distinctly different challenge. It is generally regarded as the tighter and tougher of the two courses, placing even greater emphasis on accurate driving, positioning and course management.
The challenge begins immediately with the unusual opening par 3, playing more than 200 yards across a valley of heather to an elevated green – an introduction that leaves little time to ease into the round.
There are scoring opportunities through the opening nine, but the character changes as the round progresses. The closing stretch is particularly demanding, finishing with five consecutive par 4s where a good score can quickly come under pressure.
Natural slopes, heather, mature pines and strategically positioned hazards are used throughout rather than relying simply on length, showcasing the subtlety for which Fowler's course architecture became renowned.
